Getting as much out of a digital picture for print purposes is something that every fine art photographer strives for. One of the techniques you hear about more and more is called High Dynamic Range Photography, or HDR Photography. Since digital cameras try to capture the mid tones in order to get a balanced picture it is easy to leave out a lot of image data in the darker areas or the lighter areas therfore in those sections of th photo you might not get the imagery you want. This is where HDR comes in. With HDR you take multiple shots with different exposures of the same subject and then overlay or combine the photos to get the hight range of dark, mid, and light tones. It really helps when you plan on printing and image because the more data you photo has the better off you are in getting as many tones as possible in printing. At FinerWorks.com I get a lot of customers asking me how they can get the most out of their print. With digital printing, especially in large format printing on alternative media like canvas or even photo papers where some of the printers used do not always live up to the standards of their smaller inkjet brothers, this is very important.
This short video does a decent job of explaining it in more detail however if you search online for HDR photography you will find more examples and tutorials.
